Jones vs. Cormier bout changed to No Contest
At the direction of California State Athletic Commission executive director Andy Foster, the bout between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones at UFC 214 on July 29, 2017, in Anaheim, California has been officially changed to a No Contest. This comes after Jones tested positive for metabolites from the steroid turinabol in a test administered on July 28, the day before the event. The B Sample also tested positive for the turinabol metabolite M3.
There is now no question that Jones was competing with metabolites from a prohibited drug in his system, and thus the bout outcome is not legitimate. How the drug came into his system is another question, that will be determined in time. However, while inadvertent use of the drug may lessen Jones suspension, it does not change the fact that he competed with a prohibited substance in his system, and thus the bout outcome is a No Contest.
Prior to the fight, Jones was the UFC interim light heavyweight champion, and Daniel Cormier was the light heavyweight champion. As the bout outcome has been declared a no contest, Daniel Cormier will have to be restored as champion. Whether the UFC allows Jones to keep his interim belt as the process plays out is an internal matter.
