Question Kickboxing Trip to Train in Amsterdam

    Hi Guys,

I am from Vancouver Canada and am looking to book a trip to Amsterdam to train kickboxing for a month. I am trying to sort out the budget and am having a tough time with the cost of accomodation. Has anyone in the forum done this training trip and have any recomendations on getting budget accomodation for this training trip? Should I be considering taking train to Amsterdam for training and staying elsewhere? Are hostels the way to go? I would like to try and hit up Mike's Gym but I am aware there are lots of other quality gyms in Amsterdam so I don't mind training elsewhere as long as training is world class and accessible by transit (or close to accomodation).

Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance,
    -Hanz

Amsterdam is quite expensive with sleeping arrangements. I think Mejiro Gym is the way to go if you're going to stay in the center of Amsterdam. Mike's Gym is a little far from the center but if you can find accomodation near it then ofcourse it's a great gym...

I know that Luciën Carbin often has international students sleeping in his house. He cooks for them and they can train twice a day. I think it's safe to say that Luciën is one of the best trainers in the world.

if i was you i would have gone to : Mikes, mejiro, vos, FFC and most of the time @ mousid. Try different schools to learn as much as possible.

I think that mousid has surpassed every trainer in the world. he is another level, above the highest level.

X2 Mousid is technical supurb. (But all the others mentioned are great as well. I think you have to make a choice depending on where you will be sleeping.)

If you don't have al lot of money too spend you could think about a hostel.

If you're going to be training, you could just as well stay at http://www.campingzeeburg.nl/ and rent/buy a bike to commute to the training!

Ivan Hippolyte from Vos Gym...the way sensei Hippolyte demonstrates and explanes techniques is very impressive...knowing he's a former world champion himself who even fought in Thailand will probably make you more eager to learn.

    Very, very good teacher...

check out 6.30min....the way he lifts the students arm and locks it right away in the clinch...and then turns....

Thank you very much for everyone who has provided their input and personal experience. To everyone who replied to this thread and also sent PM's, I appreciate all the help and input from local guys familiar with the scene. I have gotten a lot of input regarding the gyms and I plan to make use of them... If anyone else has more input on accomodations (besides the ones provided... campingzeeburg & hostels) please do not hesitate to let me know since this would help finalize one of my long dreams to train dutch kickboxing in the Nederlands with the best.

    Best Regards,
    -Hanz

Hi guys, what do you guys think about staying in Zaandam? It seems like it will save me about 50% on accomodation cost compared to Amsterdam, and from what I have seen online, it is only a 15 minute train to Amsterdam Central. Since the consesus seems to be to try the different gyms out...I could take the train and check out and train at the gym's in Amsterdam, save money on accomodation, and also train at Mike's Gym in Zaandam.

How much is a monthly train/transit pass? Is it really worth paying the extra price to stay in Amsterdam?

Any advice from you locals is appreciated. Thanks in advance,
    -Hanz

a train pass Zaandam - Amsterdam is 85 euro a month

Amsterdam is Nice and à Nice place to stay but imo not worth paying all the extra money just to sleep there
