Floyd Mayweather Jr said last night that Manny Pacquiao, if he agrees to fight him, won’t be getting the same money he would have gotten had they fought each other in 2010 when they first attempted to negotiate a fight.

Mayweather says that Pacquiao is begging for the same money he would have got back then, but that’s not going to happen. Pacquiao has since lost two fights, and Mayweather isn’t going to offer him the same deal as before. Mayweather was ready to give Pacquiao a 50-50 purse split back in 2010, but that isn’t happening this time.

Mayweather didn’t say what kind of purse split Pacquiao will get this time, but you have to imagine that it’ll be worse than 60-40. Just how much worse is unknown. But even Pacquiao does a 70-30 purse split, that’s a lot more money than he’d get if he were to face one of his promoter Bob Arum’s stable fighters.

Getting 30 percent for a fight against Mayweather is good money, and a lot more than Pacquiao can make fighting the likes of Brandon Rios, Tim Bradley, Chris Algieri, Jessie Vargas and Terence Crawford.

“You lost twice and now you’re coming back begging for the same money. That’s not going to happen,” Mayweather said last night on Showtime. “You didn’t want to take random blood and urine testing and that’s why the fight didn’t happen. And then I offered you $40 million. They didn’t want to make the fight happen,” Mayweather said.

Pacquiao and Arum are going to need to accept a lower purse split for this fight if they want to fight Mayweather. If they start talking 55-45 or 50-50, then you can pretty much forget about the fight ever taking place. But Arum and Pacquiao need to see it a potential 2-fight situation.

Sure, they’ll get a low purse split for the first fight, but if they win then they can ask for a 50-50 purse split for the rematch. I don’t think Pacquiao is going to win, and you have to wonder whether he and Arum believe they can win either.

If so, they should gladly accept the smaller money now in order to get the fight. You can’t expect Mayweather to give Pacquiao an even split with him losing twice and with his pay-per-view numbers not looking good.

At the end of the day the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight negotiations will likely be stopped over the purse split. Mayweather is the A-side and if he’s only offering a 20-30 percent split for Pacquiao for the fight then they have no other choice but to accept it if they want the fight with him. If they get stubborn and forget who they’re negotiating with then they’ll blow the negotiations.

Pacquiao and Arum need to realize that they’re not dealing with one of Pacquiao’s typical opponents like Rios, Bradley, Marquez or Algieri. Mayweather is the pay-per-view king of the sport right now, and he naturally is going to want to get the lion’s share of the loot for a fight against Pacquiao.

In a recent interview with ESNEWS, Floyd Mayweather was asked about Amir Khan’s dominating performance of Devon Alexander. He responded, “The other night I think he did 4,000. So, Amir Khan, his name holds no weight. No one knows who Amir Khan is, but those involved in boxing. My focus is Manny Pacquiao. Let’s make it happen.”

In a way, Mayweather has a valid point. Though Amir Khan has impressive boxing abilities, he has yet to challenge and win against an opponent who can increase his popularity in not just boxing fans but casual fans.

Mayweather has only two fights left on his Showtime contract. It’s been said that he supposedly owes Showtime $16 million from the last two Maidana fights, which both showed decline in Mayweather’s PPV numbers. It’s unknown if this is true or not.

Mayweather might also be competing with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Miguel Cotto on the Cinco De Mayo weekend date, May 2nd. With this said, Mayweather will most likely be looking for someone who can be enough of a sell to make Showtime happy, as well as make Canelo/Cotto the lesser draw. Of course, Manny Pacquiao would be the one to provide him this, not Amir Khan, so it makes sense for Mayweather to be focusing on making the Pacquiao fight happen instead.

This is probably a devastating blow for Khan, who has been extremely vocal about wanting the Mayweather fight for months. Oscar De La Hoya had been promoting the fight as if the winner will immediately get Pacquiao or Mayweather. But, as the two fighters seem to be materializing a fight with one another instead, Khan may be left watching on the sidelines. For him, he should focus on finding a worthy opponent to increase his popularity outside of his home country, United Kingdom.

Kell Brook has called out Khan, telling him his win over Alexander doesn’t allow him to skip ahead of the “Mayweather fight” line. With Brook being undefeated, he could be a great opportunity for Amir. Timothy Bradley, Keith Thurman, and even a rematch with Danny Garcia, are also opponents that Khan could look to for his next fight. For when it comes to Floyd Mayweather, it seems Mayweather wants him to step into the ring with some cougars before he faces the lion.
