Negotiations for the boxing mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao have been closer than it's ever been, but there's still some drama involved between the two camps.
Last week, Bob Arum has gone on record to say that
Manny Pacquiao has agreed to all the terms set by Mayweather's representatives. They've reportedly agreed on a May 2 date with a 60/40 split favoring the American, with the only hurdle being the final 'go signal' from Floyd himself.
It looked like the mega-fight between the two top boxers was finally pushing through, but from the looks of it, there will still be more hurdles involved. Mayweather hasn't signed, and Top Rank has since given a deadline up until the end of the month.
"My promoter and I, we’ve already agreed to the terms and conditions of whatever he wants. We’re just waiting on the signed contract from him," Pacquiao told the
LA Times, while also admitting he doesn't know the finer details of what's holding up the deal. "That’s the hard part – if they will fight or not. We have to know soon, because if they will not fight, we can move on and choose another opponent"
"We have a deadline… this month."
"I don’t have an idea," Manny said if he thinks the long overdue bout will finally push through. "The fans deserve this fight. We’re waiting on the signed contract. It’s up to them."

Mayweather on the other hand, has also since gone on
The Whoolywood Shuffle (Transcript from Milan Ordonez) to say that Pacquiao doesn't really have a say in any of this.
"Pacquiao said that he agreed to everything. What did you agree to? You have no say so," Mayweather said. "You have a boss. That's called Top Rank Promotions. That's not called Pacquiao Promotions. With my company, it's called Mayweather Promotions."
"Do I want to fight Pacquiao? Absolutely! Are we negotiating? Absolutely! But has the fight been made? Not at all," he continued. "We're trying, but it's been extremely difficult dealing with Top Rank. I don't want to sit right here and point the finger at Pacquiao and say it's him, because it's not Pacquiao. It's his promoter."
"So a lot of times when Pacquiao says, 'Oh, I agree', You don't have nothing to do with this. You're not a boss. On the chess board, you're a pawn."

Here’s the thing boxing fans, we all need to relax. Stop believing the nonsense that Floyd Mayweather Jr. is going to fight Miguel Cotto, Manny Pacquiao is going to fight Jessie Vargas and Alex Ariza knows what he’s doing because at the end of the day, the “Super Bowl of Boxing” will take place on May 2nd as I’ve been saying for the last four weeks.

It’s just a matter of time before the final contract is ironed out by CBS/Showtime and HBO, and once this is done, Floyd can sign off on the deal and everyone can finally breathe a sigh of relief.

According to what Bob Arum told the New York Daily News yesterday, he stated, “I am very positive this fight is going to happen.”

Arum said this in response to ridiculous comments made by Ariza, who said a couple of days ago that Arum was the sole reason why the fight wouldn’t materialize and called him a “roadblock” in the negotiations.

“Ariza has nothing to do with anything [involved] to the negotiations. Everything is agreed to, do you understand?” Arum said yesterday.

Ariza, a strength and conditioning coach, acting as if he’s a Mayweather adviser and saying he knows what’s going on with the contract talks and suggesting that Pacquiao should be doing this and that is like Justin Fortune or Pacquiao’s chief of security going public to state the reason the fight isn’t getting signed is because Floyd is having second thoughts in risking his “zero.”

Clearly, it is becoming more and more obvious that the back-and-forth going on between the Mayweather camp and Pacquiao camp as well as all of the Twitter comments have one singular purpose – to create more hype. Not that the super fight needs any more publicity and hype, but the increasing fan fervor and media uproar that has gone on the last two weeks serves the primary purpose of measuring if this fight has lost its appeal since negotiations broke down several times in 2009, 2010, and 2011. It’s nothing more than to gauge if fan interest is still as huge as it was five years ago.

I have no doubt in my mind things are coming to fruition albeit slowly but surely. It’s a process and when a spectacle this big is going to be made, the process takes time to develop. You can’t just simply write up a contract and have both parties sign it.

Both fighters still have to read the contract, seek advice from their manager/promoter, and evaluate all of the figures and numbers with their representatives to ensure it makes sense.
Lastly, the fact that this fight is going to be a joint broadcast between HBO and Showtime further complicates matters, thus prolonging the process.

Stephen Espinoza, V.P. of Showtime, has been a proponent of the fight the entire time and has voiced his support of the fight eventually materializing. If there’s any figure involved in these talks that we need to take seriously, it’s Espinoza. We shouldn’t take what he says with a grain of salt because he’s the man, along with Les Moonves, who is a central figure in making this fight happen.

Espinoza told the Associated Press recently, “Personally I’ve been involved in these negotiations continuously since the very first time in 2009. I can say I’m not sure there’s a point where I personally observed [Mayweather] wanting it more than over the last few months.”

Additionally, all-time boxing great Sugar Ray Leonard told FightHype.com yesterday, “I’ve heard from some very reliable sources that the fight’s going to come to fruition. It’s going to happen. It is the fight that will break all records. I can’t wait to see it.”

So hold your horses boxing fans. Relax your mind and let your conscience be free. Team Mayweather’s stance all along has been to stay quiet on matters related to the actual contract and negotiations. Pacquiao’s team has taken the position it wants to take, which is to be more vocal about the process and let the world know that talks have been ongoing.

As you can see, Canelo Alvarez and Cotto have already taken a back seat to allow this fight to take its course. I’m almost 100% sure the fight will be announced either at the end of the week or sometime next week. There’s even a huge possibility that both Pacquiao and Mayweather will attend the Super Bowl on February 1 and give fans a sneak peek at “Fistory.”
Enjoy the show. Now is when things start to get fun.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman says the World Boxing Council has made the moves to ensure that the May 2nd fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao fight takes place. Sulaiman says it’s now up to the two superstars to give fight fans the mega-bout that the world has been asking for in the last few years.

If you look at the moves that the WBC has made, the one thing that jumps out at you is the previous high ranking that they gave Pacquiao in order to put him in position to face Mayweather for his WBC belt.

Since Pacquiao is now the WBO welterweight champion, the WBC no longer has him ranked in their top 15. In his place, the WBC has Amir Khan ranked No.1. That would seem to be the WBC’s next hope for Mayweather to fight after or in place of the Pacquiao fight.

“The world has been waiting for Mayweather-Pacquiao for several years now. The WBC did everything possible to enhance it, to make sure there were no obstacles for the fight to happen, and it is up to them to get into the ring or not,” Sulaiman said. “The boxing world can be assured that in 2015 there will be many, many great fights. If the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight doesn’t happen, there will be other great fights. Hopefully, it will happen; everybody wants to see that fight. Both fighters deserve that fight, and to prove it in the ring what the world wants to see,” Sulaiman said.

Mayweather and Pacquiao both want the mega-fight. The only thing that could potentially stop the fight from happening is the two of them getting locked up over their continued negotiations, which are still not compete despite their being only three days before Pacquiao’s deadline to walk away from the negotiations on January 31st.

The other thing that could trip up the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight and ruining it for the boxing fans is the HBO-Showtime negotiations. The two companies still haven’t completed their negotiations and its unknown when/if they ever will. The talk is that they’re stuck on the subject of the rebroadcast rights.

Pacquiao really needs a win right now because another defeat could put drive down his pay-per-view numbers even lower than they are now. Pacquiao has lost two out of his last five fights, and he’s not fought anyone that you can call a good fighter since he was knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez in 2012. Pacquiao’s since then have come against Brandon Rios, Tim Bradley and Chris Algieri.
