Dong Hyun Kim vs. Gunnar Nelson headlines UFC Fight Night 99 in Belfast, Northern Ireland
The UFC’s return to Northern Ireland this fall has its main event.
The UFC Fight Night 99 headliner will be a welterweight bout between Dong Hyun Kim (21-3-1 MMA, 12-3 UFC) and Gunnar Nelson (15-2-1 MMA, 6-2 UFC), UFC officials today announced. No other bookings were announced for the card, and Kim-Nelson is the first fight announced for the event so far.
UFC Fight Night 99 takes place Nov. 19 at SSE Arena in Belfast. Broadcast plans have not yet been announced. It is the first of two fight cards on the same day for the UFC. UFC Fight Night 100 takes place later in the day in Brazil.
Kim has won back-to-back fights and six of his past seven overall. The South Korean has yet to fight in 2016, however. At UFC 187 in May 2015, Kim submitted Josh Burkman with an arm-triangle choke. He followed that up with his first fight in his home country in more than 11 years and didn’t disappoint with a first-round TKO of Dominic Waters.
Prior to that, “Stun Gun” had a four-fight winning streak snapped by a Tyron Woodley 61-second TKO in Macau in August 2014. The loss snapped a run that included bonus-winning knockouts of Erick Silva and John Hathaway.
Kim has been one of the most successful welterweights in UFC history. His only losses have come to eventual champions or title challengers: Woodley, the current welterweight champ; Demian Maia, a former middleweight challenger and potential upcoming welterweight challenger; and Carlos Condit, a former interim welterweight titleholder and recent title challenger.
Nelson, from Iceland, is a frequent training partner of featherweight champion Conor McGregor. After starting his career unbeaten at 13-0-1, including a perfect 4-0 start in the UFC with three submission wins, he has alternated wins and losses for his past four fights.
His unbeaten run was halted by a split-decision loss to Rick Story nearly two years ago in Sweden. He rebounded with a first-round submission of Brandon Thatch at UFC 189 in July 2015, but stumbled with a decision loss to Maia at UFC 194 this past December. But again, he bounced back with a bonus-winning submission of Albert Tumenov at UFC Fight Night 87 in the Netherlands in May. Five of his six UFC wins have been by submission.
More fights for UFC Fight Night 99 are expected to be announced soon. Tickets go on sale later this month.
