Glen Johnson vs. Roy Jones Preview

    by Michael Lamkin

On September 25th, Roy Jones will do something that he's only had to do once before. Step into the ring after a defeat. Only this time, it won't be against the opponent who defeated him. It will be against Glen Johnson, the current IBF Light Heavyweight titleholder.

Although Johnson is the titleholder, all of the attention will be on Jones, the heavy favorite. With the attention, come the questions. Have his skills really deteriorated that much? After his first "legitimate" loss (at least in Jones' eyes), how mentally prepared will he be for the fight? How will his chin react when Johnson lands the first hard shot of the night?

Jones could have made a justifiable excuse for his performance in the first Tarver fight. After putting on over 20 pounds to fight John Ruiz, Jones says he was weight-drained when he stepped into the ring with Tarver last year. By all accounts, that appeared to be the case as Jones tired badly late in the fight. In the rematch, however, Jones looked very sharp. He easily won the first round and was on his way to winning the second until Tarver landed the magic shot.

But, was that a case of deteriorated skills, or a "lucky shot"? Roy Jones is 35 years old, and it is very rare that a fighter stays at the top of his game that late in his career. You never know.

Jones has never seemed to have problems getting mentally prepared for fights. after getting knocked out for the first time in his career, Jones seemed to be handling it well in the post fight interview . Of course he offered excuses, but what top fighter doesn't after a loss? But, when he enters the ring against Johnson and sees punches being thrown at him, will he handle it with the poise of a seasoned veteran? Or will he flash back to visions of the man who knocked him out? You never know.

Jones' chin has never been questioned before. He has withstood hard shots from fighters such as Thomas Tate, Merqui Sosa, David Telesco and even John Ruiz at heavyweight. In the first Tarver fight, he took Tarver's best shots for 12 rounds. But something happened in the rematch. Even the best of chins eventually shatter when you put enough cracks in it. Sugar Ray Robinson had one of the toughest chins of all time, but in his final fight against the very light-hitting Joey Archer, he was knocked down and badly hurt. One thing going for Jones is that Johnson is not known as an exceptionally hard puncher. Then again, Tarver was not known as a one-punch knockout artist, either. You never know.

After a long 12-year career, Glen Johnson has finally won a world title. After a hard fought draw with Clinton Woods, he captured the vacant IBF crown with an equally hard fought unanimous decision victory. Johnson has also fought his fair share of good competion, also. In his previous two attempts at a world title, he lost a close unanimous decision to Sven Ottke and suffered a TKO loss to Bernard Hopkins. He is coming off a string of impressive performances. In addition to the two fights with Woods, Johnson has fought a controversial draw with Daniel Judah (which nearly all who watched thought was a clear Johnson victory) and won a unanimous decision over Eric Harding.

But, this is the same Johnson that has lost to Omar Sheika, Derrick Harmon and Julio Gonzalez (the latter two former Jones victims, themselves). By all accounts, Roy Jones should win this fight handily.

    But, you never know.
